Department

Releasing Date: 18 May 2012

Department is an upcoming Hindi action film directed by Ram Gopal Varma. The film stars Amitabh BacchanSanjay Dutt and Rana Daggubati in lead roles. The film was shot using several Canon EOS 5D cameras.

Contrary to buzz in the air, Ram Gopal Varma's cop drama DEPARTMENT isn't shelved. In fact the film is pretty much on schedule and its shooting would kick-start this summer.

Since Ramu had earlier announced that DEPARTMENT would be his next Hindi film after RAKHT CHARITRA, there was added rise in speculations when there was no further movement right through the first quarter of the year. Commercial failure of Abhishek's KHELEIN HUM JEE JAAN SEY and GAME further added fuel to the fire since DEPARTMENT features him in a key role. Later when Ramu announced that he was starting A LOVE STORY starting this month itself, it was time for obituaries to be written about DEPARTMENT.

'It is all sheer nonsense that I have shelved DEPARTMENT. It is very much on', one catches the filmmaker in a tad angry tone, 'People start rumours before checking facts and just end up making something out of nothing. They say that I am filling up the lost time with A LOVE STORY. Sorry, it is untrue since DEPARTMENT was always meant to begin this summer. It is sticking to the schedule. A LOVE STORY is a quickie I am making in between.'

When asked to confirm further plans for DEPARTMENT, Ramu responds while settling down, 'The film doesn't have only Abhishek in the starcast. There are many actors in the film and their combination dates had already been locked.'

Jack the Giant Killer

Jack the Giant Killer is an upcoming fantasy/adventure film based on the fairy tale of the same name. The film is directed by Bryan Singer and stars Nicholas Hoult as the titular hero with a screenplay written by Darren Lemke, Christopher McQuarrie and Dan Studney. The film is scheduled to be released on March 22, 2013.

An ancient war is reignited when a young farmhand unwittingly opens a gateway between our world and a fearsome race of giants. Unleashed on the Earth for the first time in centuries, the giants strive to reclaim the land they once lost, forcing the young man, Jack, into the battle of his life to stop them. Fighting for a kingdom, its people, and the love of a brave princess, he comes face to face with the unstoppable warriors he thought only existed in legend—and gets the chance to become a legend himself.

In January 2012, Warner Bros. moved back the release date by fourteen months to March 22, 2013. It had been set to open June 15, 2012. The Hollywood Reporterstated "Warner can likely afford the move because of Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises, which opens in July. And pushing the film back gives the studio more time for special effects, as well as a chance to attach trailers for it to Peter Jackson's Christmas tentpole The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey".

Bullet to the Head

In Movie Theaters:February 1, 2013 Nationwide
Directed by:Walter Hill
Starring:Sylvester Stallone
Sung Kang
Sarah Shahi
Distributed by:Warner Bros. Pictures

The first Sylvester Stallone ’80s action throwback flick to hit theaters in 2012 (before The Expendables 2) was originally going to be Bullet to the Head: an adaptation of Alexis Nolent’s French graphic novel “Du Plomb Dans La Tete”. The story is about a cop (Fast Five‘s Sung Kang) and a hitman (Stallone) who join forces to avenge the deaths of their respective partners.
Warner Bros. yanked Bullet to the Head from its release schedule less than two months before its original April date. Jump to the present and the studio has instead selected a February 1st, 2013 date for Sly’s buddy/action flick to storm into theaters – alongside the delayed zombie rom-drama adaptation, Warm Bodies.

Bullet to the Head, as directed by ’80s icon Walter Hill (48 Hours, Red Heat), will actually face stiff competition for the attention of action-hungry moviegoers in the traditionally slow first quarter of the year. Just two weeks before Bullet hits theaters (pun intended), the Arnold Schwarzenegger comeback vehicle The Last Stand will arrive in theaters, followed by the latest Jason Statham thriller (Parker) a week later. If that wasn’t enough, the Keanu Reeves-headed Samurai epic 47 Ronin opens just a week after Bullet to the Head – followed the next week by action movie heavyweight Bruce Willis in A Good Day to Die Hard.

That release schedule doesn’t exactly set the stage for Bullet to the Head to have much longevity, despite the film boasting a big name like Stallone alongside such fan-faves as Jason Momoa (Stargate: Atlantis, Game of Thrones) and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Oz, Lost). Additionally, rumors that Stallone did a significant rewrite of the original script co-penned by Hill and Alessandro Camon (The Messenger) – coupled with previous claims that Stallone took over editing on the film (which Warner Bros. denied) and the new February “dumping ground” release date… well, usually when there’s that much smoke, there’s also some fire.
Still, the cast and crew for Bullet to the Head reads as pretty solid, while Nolent’s source material is generally well-regarded (by those who’ve actually read it, at least). Here’s hoping the final product also turns out well – a sentiment that goes for all the aforementioned action titles due out in the first quarter of 2013.

Fast and Furious 6
Universal has just announced the next Fast and the Furious movie will hit theaters May 24, 2013 (which is Memorial Day weekend). You might remember that Universal showed a Fast and Furious 6 promo poster at the Licensing Expo in Las Vegas last week, so the 2013 release date was already known. What we didn’t know was the date.
According to the studio, Neal H. Moritz and Vin Diesel return to produce, and director Justin Lin is again helming the franchise. According to Variety, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne Johnson will all be back and we already knew Fast Five screenwriter Chris Morgan was writing the 6th installment. With Fast Five set to cross $600 million at the worldwide box office in the next few days, it’s no surprise Universal wants the next installment in less than two years. Since Fast Five did a great job at reinventing the franchise, I’m ready for the next installment. What about you?

Fast and Furious 7
While chewing the fat and shooting the breeze during a photo-session for The Hollywood Reporter, Vin Diesel appears to have confirmed that a seventh Fast & Furious is already in the works. Shooting on the sixth hasn't even started yet, but the story that's being mapped out is apparently too massive to be contained in a single movie.
The two films are being written simultaneously, according to Vin, although there's no indication of whether they'll be shooting back-to-back. “With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn’t have enough space,” Vin explains.
“We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages. The studio said, ‘You can’t fit all that story in one damn movie!’"
Without wishing to drop a spoiler on those who haven't yet caught the gloriously ludicrous Fast Five, it already seems that the next instalment will see the return of Michelle Rodriguez and Eva Mendes. So that, along with the presumable return of Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Matt Schulze, Sung Kang, Gal Gadot and, we certainly hope, Elsa Pataky and Dwayne Johnson, certainly indicates a lot of story to spread around. And then somewhere in there, there's the need to wreck some automobiles.
It's not all about the cars though, Paul Walker believes; it's really about the fighting themes of brotherhood and family. "If the action was all it was, it would have fallen off a long time ago," Walker says. Let us know if you agree with that in the comments below. And tell us how long you can see the series continuing while you're there.
Filming on Fast & Furious 6 gets going next year (after Diesel gets finished with Riddick 3), with Justin Lin at the helm, as he has been since Tokyo Drift. The release date is already set for May 27, 2013.

The Dark Knight Rises

Release Date:July 20th, 2012
Starring:Liam Neeson, Tom Hardy, Christian Bale, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Anne Hathaway
Director:Christopher Nolan
Writer:Jonathan Nolan, Christopher Nolan, David S. Goyer, Bob Kane
Studio:Warner Bros. Pictures
Genre:Superhero, Action, Adventure, Crime

This is one of the summer's most anticipated blockbusters -- the final installment in Christopher Nolan's critically revered, audience-adored Batman trilogy. Fans of Christian Bale's grittier take on the Caped Crusader will be lining up to see this last entry in the series, so be prepared for a spirited debate if you don't think your tween is ready to handle the violence in Gotham City. Considering how startlingly intense the body count and torture scenes were in The Dark Knight (and how there are even more villains in this film), it's likely to be too bloody for many older tweens and young teens.

Battleship

Artists (Cast) : Alexander Skarsgård, Brooklyn Decker, Hamish Linklater, Liam Neeson, Rihanna, Tadanobu Asano, Taylor Kitsch

Producer : Bennett Schneir, Brian Goldner, Duncan Henderson, Sarah Aubrey, Scott Stuber, Peter Berg

Director : Peter Berg
Releasing Date: 13th April 2012

It is yet another $200 million Hollywood movie about an alien invasion. It is stuffed with all the familiar elements of the genre, from characterisations to dialogues, visual effects to animation, and everything else. It has nothing new to offer in terms of ideas, story, and plot. It looks like a ‘B’ grade movie with terrible performances by its actors who are poorly supervised by the film’s director Peter Berg.

BATTLESHIP exemplifies the serious crisis of ideas that has hit Hollywood. It apparently relies on big money and its marketing machine and might to sell such bad products worldwide to recover the cost of its humongous follies in one weekend swoop. I have doubts if it will work in this case and if BATTLESHIP will be able to do even a fraction of what THE HUNGER GAMES could.

The film is based on a video game for children developed and marketed by Hasbro. The funniest thing about the movie is the request by the Universal’s PR department not to reveal the plot points toward the film’s climax. What is there to reveal or unravel that is not already revealed or unraveled in a film of this genre? Everyone knows how the climax scene will play out in such a film. The little kids can tell you that. And BATTLESHIP is the most predictable of them all. You can foretell its story and plots as soon as the first frame of the film starts to roll. You can even predict the scenes, situations, sequences, dialogues, and the relationships of its characters. There is nothing in the film that surprises you including the visual effects and the CGI generated sea-battle scenes.

The earthlings’ intense desire to connect with living creatures similar to them in the outer space makes them discover a planet in another solar system that shares all the Earth’s characteristics. They broadcast a message through powerful satellite amplifiers hoping to get some response from the alien planet. They get a response as a small alien armada descends from nowhere into the sea near Hawaii at Pearl Harbour where an international naval force is preparing to undergo routine war exercises in an atmosphere of bonhomie. On the American side is Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch), a wayward, carefree, impulsive, irresponsible, and a skirt-chasing guy who is forced to join the Navy by his elder brother Stone Hopper (Alexander Skarsgård) who commands a destroyer ship. Alex in the meantime has fallen in instant love with Samantha Shane (Brooklyn Decker), daughter of Vice Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson), after a late night bar encounter with her.

The joint naval exercise leads to a conflict between the just arrived alien armada and the international naval force, which soon turns into a full-fledged battle threatening the survival of the whole world. These aliens look like an uglier grown up versions of ET, with the addition of a hard goatee and four fingers instead of three. They move around inside robotic steel armour. They have a weakness. They cannot bear sunlight. In the ensuing battle an entire fleet of destroyers are lost including the one commandeered by Stone Hopper, our hero’s elder brother, who dies in the attack. Our hero and his ship survive but the captain of the ship becomes a war casualty. Now our ‘good for nothing skirt-chaser’ hero Alex is in charge of the destroyer and he is filled with rage over the death of his doting brother. He fights a great battle with the alien forces aided by a Japanese naval officer, a good example of rare international brotherhood. And needless to say he manages to save the world with a little help from a decommissioned battleship-cum-museum run by retired World War 2 war veterans. However, his grand feat of saving the world is not good enough for Vice Admiral Shane to say an unqualified yes to Alex’s request to marry his daughter Samantha.

The Expendables 2
Studios:Lionsgate, Millennium Films
Director:Simon West
Cast:Jason Statham, Jet Li, Sylvester Stallone
Genre:Action/Adventure
Theatrical release date:August 17, 2012

Parents need to know that The Expendables 2 is the sequel to Sylvester Stallone's highest-grossing movie since his Rocky and Rambo sequels in the 1980s. It includes most of the cast from The Expendables -- a round-up of international action stars from the past three decades -- and now includes two more casting coups: Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme. Like the previous movie, it promises lots of over-the-top action, with plenty of fighting, guns, and explosions, and possibly strong language besides (though supposedly Norris insisted on limiting the cursing so the movie could be rated PG-13 instead of R). Fans of the last movie will very likely want more.

The Amazing Spider-Man

Cast:
Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Irrfan Khan

Theatrical release date:
July 6, 2012

Review:

The Amazing Spider-Man is an upcoming American superhero film directed by Marc Webb, based on the comic book of the same name and starring Andrew Garfield as the Marvel Comics character Spider-Man. It is the fourth Columbia Pictures film that portrays Spider-Man in film and is a reboot of the film series that stars the superhero. The cast includes Garfield as Peter Parker and his alter ego, Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors. The film will portray Parker as his super powers are evolving in high school and will explore him trying to discover the truth behind his parents. The film also brings to life new designs of the film franchise such as Parker inventing artificial webs like in the original comics instead of organic webs.
The film's development began simultaneously with Sony announcing the cancellation of Spider-Man 4. Opting for a reboot with the same production team rather than another sequel, the studio announced a July 2012 release date for what was now titled The Amazing Spider-Man. James Vanderbilt was hired to write the script while Alvin Sargent and Steve Kloves helped fine-tune the script. Pre-production involved the casting of many actors and actresses trying out the role of Spider-Man and Gwen Stacy respectively until Garfield and Stone were the clear choice. Principal photography started in December 2010 in Los Angeles before moving to New York City with the help of Red Digital Cinema Camera Company's RED Epic camera. The film entered post-production in April 2011 with the film being converted to 3D with the help of 3ality Technica and with James Horner being involved with the film score.
Sony Entertainment has focused its marketing campaign with a promotional website with released images, three theatrical trailers, a prologue screening in certain cities and a video game tie-in being developed by Beenox and a viral marketing campaign among other products. The Amazing Spider-Man is scheduled to be released in 3D and in IMAX 3D on July 3, 2012. A sequel of the film is being planned for release in 2014 with James Vanderbilt hired to again write the screenplay and with Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci reported to re-write it.

Director:Boaz Yakin
Cast: Jason Statham, Catherine Chan, Chris Sarandon

Theatrical release date:May 4, 2012

Story: Mei (Catherine Chan) is wanted by all -- the Triads... The Russian mob... The NYC super and corrupt cops. Why? She has the secret code to the safe. Enter Luke Wright (Jason Statham), her protector... and the one who ultimately gets access to the safe.

Movie Review : It's a Jason Statham movie where the actor is once again seen paving his way to victory while sorting the good from the bad. So no prizes for guessing what lies in store: gun firing in loads and fist fights in aplenty. Add to that some Statham-ism and there's no looking back. Now, how many actors do we have out there who pick up call girls in NYC, pay them plenty of that dollar, get an entry into a sizzling restaurant and ask them to leave immediately. Or for that matter, how many Medowlands (New Jersey) ex-fighters do we have dressed in an executive suit breaking tracheas of the bad guys. Statham fans, there's enough of the suave in here.

But then, Jason Statham has competition in Safe. And this competition is a pretty tough one for it comes from the little Catherine Chan. With hardly any dialogues (in English) to herself, Chan actually keeps you asking for more each time she (or Statham) are missing in action. In fact, it's not just her computerised memory that helps her remember all important bank transactions in the Chinese world, it's her ultimate understanding of the big bad biz world (she excels in distinguishing between good business and the bad one) that takes you by surprise. Make sure you catch Catherine's Mei calling the shots - in every way - in the last sequence.

Of course, the two (Statham and Catherine) together make this gang war for the green bills in the bustling narrow bylanes of New York's China Town worth a watch. The action, on the other hand, is crispy and smart. As for the storyline, guess it was always meant to tread on safe ground... nothing that you have never seen before.

Review:

Here's the best thing I can say about The Avengers (and no, I will NOT refer to it as Marvel's The Avengers, because the branding is implicit):
It offers a couple of the biggest laughs in recent memory, including a slapstick gag worthy of Chuck Jones in his Looney Tunes heyday.
Thankfully, there are other nice things to say about The Avengers, a Marvel mash-up featuring a group of superheroes who (almost) all have had their own movies. Don't think of this as a sequel to the others; it's its own thing unto itself.
And, thanks to writer-director Joss Whedon, that thing is veined with wit, even as it offers exactly the kind of action that fanboys and normal movie-goers alike want out of something like this. The wisecracks and bulls-eye one-liners aside, The Avengers offers big mouthfuls of action, at a scale that tickles the imagination.
Yet Whedon also realizes what the real attraction is here: It's not the moment when these various troubled superheroes put their own issues aside and band together to fight off a horde of invading aliens (although that's a moment that's worth the wait). Rather, it's about the sturm und drang -- the personal demons that goad these differently abled creatures into battling each other.
Those, after all, are the comic books that were always the best -- the ones that pitted superhero against superhero. You always know that the superhero will defeat the villain. But when it's hero vs. hero, well, anything goes.
Or so it seems in this movie. You've got Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) vs. Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor vs. Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Hulk against Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Black Widow taking on Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner). And that's not to mention the trash talk, the best of which is offered by Downey as the ever-flippant Tony Stark.
The plot is as comic-booky as it comes, drawing on clues and hints that popped up at the end of Thor, Captain America and the Iron Man movies.
